Hate, propaganda, and misinformation are not new features of human societies. What has changed dramatically in the digital age is speed, scale, and reach. Messages that once took days or weeks to circulate through newspapers, pamphlets, or word of mouth can now spread across continents within seconds. A single post, video, or meme can reach millions before any verification, reflection, or correction occurs.

The digital revolution has effectively collapsed the distance between sender and receiver. What once required networks of institutions and intermediaries now happens with a single tap on a smartphone.

The late geographer David Harvey described this phenomenon as “time–space compression.” In his influential book The Condition of Postmodernity, Harvey argued that modern capitalism continually accelerates communication and transportation, shrinking the world by reducing the barriers of time and distance.

In today’s digital ecosystem, that compression is more intense than ever. Events unfold in real time, opinions circulate instantly, and the boundaries between truth, rumor, and propaganda blur.

Within this compressed environment, hate becomes infinitely scalable.

Nowhere is this dynamic more visible than in the online ecosystem surrounding religious and communal polarization in India. Over the past decade, hate speech targeting Muslims has proliferated across digital platforms—from conspiracy narratives circulating on WhatsApp groups to manipulated images generated through artificial intelligence, and from harassment apps targeting Muslim women to openly genocidal rhetoric appearing in viral videos.

Understanding why such content spreads so quickly requires looking deeper into the architecture of the platforms themselves.

The Algorithm Behind the Screen

Every second people spend on social media generates an enormous amount of data. Each pause, click, like, share, or comment becomes part of a behavioral record that platforms analyze continuously.

To the user, scrolling may feel passive. But behind the screen, an invisible system is constantly learning about individual preferences.

Social media platforms were initially designed as spaces for connection. Yet today they have evolved into some of the most profitable corporations in the world.

Companies like Meta Platforms, X Corp. (formerly Twitter), and Google generate revenue primarily through advertising. Their profitability depends on capturing and holding user attention for as long as possible.

This model reflects what economist Herbert A. Simon described decades ago as the “attention economy.” Simon famously warned that a wealth of information creates a poverty of attention. In an environment flooded with content, attention becomes the scarcest and most valuable resource.

Social media companies built entire business models around monetizing that resource.

The longer users remain on a platform, the more advertisements they see. The more advertisements they see, the more revenue the company generates.

In such an environment, the algorithm’s objective becomes simple: maximize engagement.

But engagement is not neutral.

Former Facebook executive Tim Kendall has openly acknowledged that the system is optimized to capture as much user attention as possible. Similarly, early Facebook president Sean Parker later admitted that social media platforms were designed to exploit vulnerabilities in human psychology through what he described as a “social validation feedback loop.”

Each notification, like, or comment delivers a small psychological reward that encourages users to return repeatedly.

Over time, algorithms learn which types of content generate the strongest reactions. They prioritize those posts because they keep users engaged longer.

Unfortunately, the content that performs best is rarely calm, thoughtful, or nuanced.

It is usually outrageous, divisive, or emotionally charged.

Technology ethicist Tristan Harris, a former Google design ethicist, has argued that social media’s economic model naturally produces polarization. The system rewards affirmation rather than information, and outrage rather than understanding.

In other words, the algorithm does not understand hate—but it learns quickly that hate performs well.

The Economics of Outrage

A landmark study conducted by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology analyzed over 126,000 news stories shared on social media. The findings were striking: false information spreads significantly faster and further than accurate information.

False news was found to be 70 percent more likely to be shared, and it reached thousands of people far more quickly than factual reporting.

Why does misinformation travel so efficiently?

Part of the answer lies in human psychology.

Researchers often refer to “negativity bias,” the tendency of the human brain to react more strongly to negative information than to neutral or positive information. From an evolutionary perspective, this bias helped early humans survive by prioritizing threats.

But in the digital age, that same psychological trait becomes a vulnerability.

Content that provokes anger, fear, or outrage triggers stronger emotional responses—and therefore stronger engagement. Algorithms detect these reactions and promote similar content more widely.

The result is a self-reinforcing loop:

  1. Outrage generates engagement
  2. Engagement generates data
  3. Data trains the algorithm
  4. The algorithm promotes more outrage

This feedback cycle transforms social media platforms into engines that reward the most emotionally provocative content.

The logic echoes ideas developed a century ago by public relations pioneer Edward Bernays, who argued that understanding psychology allows powerful actors to shape public opinion by influencing desires and beliefs.

Later, media theorists Noam Chomsky and Edward S. Herman expanded on this concept in their theory of “manufacturing consent.” They argued that mass media systems filter information in ways that often serve political and economic power.

In the digital era, that process has become automated and decentralized.

Propaganda no longer requires large institutions or state broadcasting networks. Anyone with a smartphone and an understanding of algorithmic incentives can participate.

Social media has effectively incentivized propaganda.

Creators, influencers, political operatives, and troll networks all operate within the same reward structure: the more divisive the content, the higher its reach.

In this environment, hate itself becomes profitable.

When Digital Hate Becomes Real-World Violence

The consequences of algorithmic amplification do not remain confined to online spaces.

In several cases, digital hate has translated directly into violence in the physical world.

One of the most widely cited examples occurred in Myanmar, where Facebook was widely used to spread anti-Rohingya propaganda before the Rohingya genocide. Posts portraying Rohingya Muslims as dangerous outsiders circulated widely, often accompanied by inflammatory rumors and fabricated stories.

Extremist monks, military operatives, and nationalist activists used the platform to distribute hate speech and mobilize public hostility.

Later investigations found that the platform had ignored multiple warnings from researchers about the escalating danger. In 2018, Facebook itself acknowledged that it had not done enough to prevent its platform from being used to incite violence.

The Myanmar case revealed a deeper structural problem: platforms do not simply host content—they actively decide which voices are amplified.

This pattern appears in other contexts as well.

Internal data from X Corp. reportedly showed that the platform’s algorithm tended to amplify right-leaning political content more strongly than left-leaning sources. Meanwhile, human rights organizations have accused Meta Platforms of suppressing certain political narratives while allowing others to circulate freely.

By 2025, several major platforms had rolled back key fact-checking and hate-speech policies, even after years of evidence linking viral misinformation to real-world harm.

These decisions highlight a troubling reality: platform governance is shaped not only by ethics but also by profit incentives and political pressures.

India’s Digital Landscape of Hate

India’s online environment illustrates how platform dynamics can intersect with political polarization.

Over the past decade, the country’s digital sphere has witnessed a sharp rise in communal rhetoric. A study by the Observer Research Foundation documented a significant increase in hate speech targeting Muslims, particularly around issues such as cow protection, beef consumption, and interfaith relationships.

Investigations by international media organizations have also revealed how political actors sometimes benefit from the viral spread of polarizing narratives.

A The Wall Street Journal investigation reported that a senior Facebook executive had resisted enforcing hate-speech rules against controversial posts by politician T. Raja Singh, allegedly because enforcement might harm business interests.

Meanwhile, research groups tracking hate speech have documented a steady increase in offline hate incidents, many of which were first broadcast on social media.

Ironically, some of the accounts documenting hate speech have themselves faced suspension or blocking orders.

This creates a paradox: the same algorithmic system that amplifies inflammatory rhetoric can also suppress those attempting to expose it.

The Convergence of Politics and Platform Capitalism

The intersection of political polarization and platform economics produces a powerful alignment of incentives.

For political actors, polarizing narratives can mobilize supporters and shape electoral discourse.

For corporations, polarizing content often generates the highest engagement.

When these incentives overlap, hate can become a shared enterprise—profitable both politically and economically.

The result is an ecosystem where outrage circulates rapidly, reinforcing ideological divisions and shaping public perception.

India’s digital environment has increasingly become part of a global pattern in which communal propaganda spreads through networks optimized for engagement rather than truth.

The Algorithm and the Future of Democracy

The rise of algorithmically amplified hate poses profound questions for democratic societies.

When digital platforms prioritize engagement above all else, they risk transforming public discourse into a marketplace of emotional reactions rather than reasoned debate.

This transformation can weaken the foundations of democracy in several ways:

  • It normalizes extreme rhetoric.
  • It blurs the boundary between fact and misinformation.
  • It amplifies polarizing narratives while sidelining moderate voices.

Over time, these dynamics reshape the public sphere itself.

The problem, however, is not technology alone.

Algorithms do not emerge in isolation; they are designed within economic systems and political environments that shape their objectives.

Digital technologies often replicate and magnify existing social inequalities, biases, and power structures.

In that sense, the algorithm is less an independent force than a mirror reflecting the priorities of the systems that created it.

Beyond the Algorithm

The challenge facing societies today is not simply to regulate platforms or redesign algorithms—though both may be necessary.

The deeper challenge lies in rethinking the relationship between technology, power, and democratic values.

If attention continues to be treated as a commodity, platforms will remain incentivized to promote whatever content captures it most effectively.

And as long as outrage remains the most reliable generator of attention, the digital ecosystem will continue to reward division.

Recognizing this dynamic is the first step toward addressing it.

The next step requires confronting the broader structures—economic, political, and technological—that allow hate to flourish within the architecture of the internet.

Only then can digital spaces begin to function not as amplifiers of hostility but as platforms for dialogue, understanding, and democratic engagement.
